Frequently Asked Questions

* How long does it take to install solar panels?

Installing solar system may take one to few days, depending on the size of the solar system, mounting arrangement, site specifications & weather condition.

In general, 5 kW system can be installed within 2-3 days.

* Do I have to rewire my house?

It is not required to rewire your house as all the wiring stays exactly the same.
New solar system consists of few additional parts to your existing electricity system:
Solar panels, Inverter and new two-way utility meter (Net Meter).

* Does solar PV system limit the usage of household electric appliances?

Your solar PV system power is synchronized with CEB/LECO system power. Household appliances operate using solar energy during day time and when the solar power is less, they automatically take power from grid supply and do not depend on solar power. That’s why you can operate your domestic appliances during night time even without battery backups. Therefore, never have a doubt that varying weather conditions (cloudy/ rainy) will affect your day-to-day activities connected to your house wiring.

* How to decide the suitable PV system size for my premises?

The system capacity depends on average monthly electricity requirement on your premises. In addition to that system capacity will be limited by useable roof area and connection type.

* How much does it cost for installing solar system in Sri Lanka?

Pricing depends on the electricity consumption of the customer. Forsyth Renewables Energy (Private) Limited will pay a free site visit and an estimation will be provided based on the site inspection and customer requirement.

* What are the financing options available for solar systems?

You can either directly pay by cash in three installments or you can apply for a loan through a preferred bank which provides loan funded by Asian Development Bank for Rooftop Solar Power Generation Projects at an interest rate of 8% p.a.  Please do contact Forsyth Renewables Energy for further information.

* How do I install a solar PV system?

Once the site inspection is done, quotation and the necessary financial and legal paperwork will be sorted out by Forsyth Renewable Energy. Later, an installation date will be fixed and our installation team will come and take care of it.

* What are the advantages that I can obtain installing solar PV system?

With the rising cost of electricity, solar panels can save a lot on your electricity bill and also you are not affected from future tariff changes. There is no risk of disconnection and you can spend a convenient and luxurious life style by liberally using energy in air conditioning, heating, cooking, electric vehicles and all that.

And also solar energy is freely available and does not produce any pollution thereby reduces your carbon footprint. It even adds aesthetic value to your roof top and even heat transfer into your house via roof would be considerably reduced.

* What roof type is best suited for a solar system?

Southerly-facing roofs with no shade from other obstacles like trees or buildings are ideal for installing solar. When it comes to installation of solar panels in Sri lanka, the solar panels are needed to be oriented about 7-10 degrees to the horizontal in southern direction.

* What if my roof is in poor condition?

Since a solar PV system would last for more than 25 years, if your roof is in need of repair or doesn’t have a lot of years left, it is recommended to repair the roof and install solar at the same time.

* What maintenance will my solar system need?

Solar PV systems require little maintenance since they do not have any moving parts, just to remove fallen leaves, animal droppings and dust particles deposited on the panel surface twice a year. Based on the installation area, the number of cleaning turns will vary over the solar system lifespan of 25 years.

* Can we use this as a solution for a power cut?

When there is a grid failure, the inverter in our domestic/ commercial/ industrial solar PV system is automatically shut down due to safety concerns. However, technology is advancing and storage batteries are being manufactured where you can store the energy you produce and use it later. Contact us for more details.

* How does solar photovoltaic (PV) panel work?

Solar panel absorbs the sun’s energy throughout the day and converts it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses run on alternating current (AC) electricity, so the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. You either use the electricity in your house or send it back to the grid.

* Does solar PV system produce power when the sun isn’t shining?

The power generation from solar PV system depends on the sunlight (Irradiation level). Therefore, under cloudy weather conditions, solar PV system produces less amount of energy compared to a sunny day.

* How Can I know whether my system operates properly?

There is an online remote monitoring app which illustrates real time data on the system. Even customers can observe real-time, daily, monthly, and total energy production by seeing inverter LCD display.

Forsyth Renewables Energy (Private) Limited would provide an annual report on solar harvest including the above data for each and every customer.
